Hope Will Only Get You So Far

You can hope in one hand, shit in the other, and see which one fills up faster. I interpret this as another way of saying that hope isn’t going to get your very far.

There are generally 3 stages that we work through on anything in life. First, you have the Planning Stage. This is where hope lies. You hope for something, and then start the planning process of brainstorming how you will eventually get it. The second stage is Execution, and this is where the big effort action takes place. Finally, you end with Reflection/Revision.

Here’s the thing: Way too many people get stuck in the first phase, some even becoming paralyzed to move on to any type of action. This is not where you want to be. Yes, hope and planning are important, but to get the things that you want out of life it’s going to take some work. Too many people hope and hope some more, but never take the action that’s necessary.

I’m not downgrading hope. It’s the first step in figuring out what you want. But don’t dwell on it for too long. Start taking the little steps that will move the needle forward and use that hope as motivation when things get tough. Hope, by itself, will only get you so far.
